TORONTO – There’s no better way to start off a new year, and a new decade, than with a commitment to be your best self.
And according to Michelle Hillier being your best self is not about exercising more or eating better. It’s about finding your groove.
Hillier is the founder and creative director of Experience Groove. As a self-titled movement disruptor, Hillier connects with audiences in a different way, getting people of all ages and abilities to move in their own way, creating an unforgettable experience at your event.
We reached out to Hillier this year to give us her three tips on how you can find your own groove. Here’s what she had to say:
1. Find a way to move your body that you love
According to Hillier, the key to moving your body and feeling your best is finding something you love to do. It does no favours to commit yourself to something you hate doing, she said.
“People have been curious about this concept in their work and lives for decades, with ideas rolling around about doing what you love, or loving what you do. The same goes for moving your body,” she said. “Whether you gravitate towards individual or group activities such as walking, biking, swimming, dancing or a fun organized class in your community – pick something you’re passionate about. This way, you will make more of an effort to integrate it into your daily routines.”
2. Find the people to support you and give you accountability
It’s easier to stay on track when you have a support system around you, Hillier said.
“We all want to start something and see it through and there is research to support this idea if we have accountability partners or groups, our rate of success and commitment increases,” she said. “When you have people messaging you, waiting for you to show up, or are just by your side encouraging you, you will do it.”
Hillier encouraged a mobile group chat to keep everyone in the group moving, or commit to weekly walks or group classes with one another.
“When someone else is counting on you to show up, you will,” she said.
3. Remember, “You can’t get it wrong!”
“You can’t get it wrong” is Hillier’s motto that is at the heart of her groove experiences. It’s how she gets people of any age, size, and abilities moving and grooving at events.
“It is extremely empowering when you do things your way and not care what others think,” she said. “Be creative, be different, be playful. Whichever way you choose in 2020 to get your groove back and move your body, it is perfect.”
