The $23-million renovation and modification of the South Building at the Metro Toronto Convention Centre (MTCC) is on track to be completed in early 2018.
The modification, which was announced in January, is being guided by tvsdesign and IA Interior Architects. Tvsdesign led the MTCC’s successful North Building renovation and designed four of the top five convention centres in North America. Once complete, the South Building will reflect a state-of-the-art space, inspired by biophilic design and representations of natural elements.
“The South Building modification reflects our commitment to offer a world-class convention centre and create successful event experiences,” said Barry Smith, president and CEO of MTCC. “The project has been carefully planned based on direct feedback from our customers and their event needs. It is our mandate to continue to attract conventions and events to Toronto.”
The renovation includes the creation of eight new meeting rooms, offering events over 11,000 square feet of additional contemporary and flexible space in the South Building. Highlights of the revamped space include redesigned registration areas, an impressive digital experience, a new escalator and service elevator to improve the vertical movement of attendees and exhibitors, updated lighting, a revamped café space, and modern interior design finishes consistent with the recently updated North Building.
The project also includes the installation of operable walls between a few spaces to create another flexible 8,000 square feet meeting room. The operable walls will open up spaces and allow for events to expand and flow into the pre-function areas.
