OAKLAND, CA — Oakland Marriott City Center has unveiled a $22 million renovation with 500 newly designed guestrooms and suites featuring a new design, it was announced in mid-July.
In the winter, the new M Club will be unveiled, along with a new second-floor Great Room restaurant serving locally sourced dishes.
Oakland Marriott City Center is one of the first U.S. properties to unveil new design features with local art inspiration inside and out. The hotel has commissioned an Oakland muralist to transform an exterior wall of the property into a piece of public art to be unveiled this fall.
Guestrooms and suites feature 55-inch wall-mounted HD LED televisions, platform beds with updated mattresses and a colour scheme that encourages relaxation
With a nod to the bustling Port of Oakland, one of the busiest ports in California, artwork above each bed highlights the cranes that punctuate Oakland’s skyline and creates a focal point for the guestroom. Design elements feature a mix of “stacked containers and brick walls” with exposed plaster and ochre and sunshine to reflect the native colours of The Golden State.
Inspired by shipping containers and industrial details, guestroom furniture highlights riveted accents and raw wood planes. The dresser and desk is branded with a hand-stenciled stamp of 1852, representing the year that Oakland was founded. Galvanized steel pipe rods are reflected in the leg details on all of the seating and hanging lamps, while glass and iron shades highlight the balance of the lighting in the room. Bay Area suspension bridges inspire the design of the custom wire art hangings. A free-flowing carpet pattern represents the movement of bay waters neutral shades of gray. Architecturally-inspired fabrics that resemble the suspension bridge framework and accents of colour evoke California’s sunshine.
Several suites have been selected to reflect a special local theme. The first will feature Oaklandish, the city’s iconic brand of apparel.
