Sustainability is a buzzword that won’t be going anywhere anytime soon. And the push to go fully earth-friendly may take some time. There’s a learning curve with any change, but people seem to be headed in the right direction.
The IBM Institute for Business Value completed a survey in 2022, in which “93% of global respondents said the pandemic had influenced their views on sustainability.”
The report goes on to say, “The ability to remove these barriers puts businesses in the driver’s seat, giving them the opportunity to make a positive impact on the environment. It all comes down to pulling the levers that will both resonate with consumers and boost the bottom line – from offering incentives to helping them minimize their carbon footprint.”

So can you make an environmental impact when it comes to something as small as a booth at a show? The answer is yes. Here are a few ways:
- Opt for environmentally name badges, skipping the one-time use plastic.
- Rent instead of buy, when it comes to fixtures and furniture. Many companies like to switch up booth décor from show to show, which keeps things interesting. By renting chairs, for example, you avoid a stockpile of furniture you won’t use or will end up tossing out in the long-run.
- Use compostable materials for your signage, when possible.
- Flyers and brochures are nice to put in the hands of your audience, but digital marketing and QR codes can work wonders, too – plus eliminate all that waste. If you aren’t a fan of digital, try partnering with eco-friendly print companies.
- If you have a large team at a show, consider car-pooling to cut down on emissions.
- Handing out swag? Be sure the items are usable and a friend to the earth. Resusable water bottles are a hit, or go for food. No one will waste or toss out a good snack (just be sure it is in paper packaging!).
