This year’s Meetings Industry Euchre Tournament (MIET) raised $11,000 in support of the Princess Margaret Hospital Cancer Research Foundation. In addition, Scotiabank gave $5,000 in matching funds, bringing the event’s total donation to the Foundation to $16,000.
Held May 22, 2014 at the Allstream Centre, Exhibition Place in Toronto, the event started with the ringing of a bell. As industry veteran Susan Rock from the Faculty of Medicine at the University of Toronto, shared with attendees, the bell signified the end of her cancer treatment at Princess Margaret Hospital. At MIET, it marked the beginning of an exciting, fun evening for the 100-plus euchre players who gathered to raise funds and play cards.
Before sitting down at the card tables, attendees enjoyed euchre lessons and tips from Alice Parnis of Event Fusion; dined on delicious sliders courtesy of Calgary Meetings + Conventions (served up by catering staff wearing white cowboy hats); took part in a range of great raffles and draws including balloon pops and a 50/50 draw; and networked with industry friends.
For the first time in its three-year history, MEIT offered a “Bring a Foursome for $400” package. Vicky Fanuzzi from The Fairmont Royal York Hotel took advantage of the package to entertain her clients in a completely new environment. “This was my first tournament,” she said. “My client hesitated when I invited him but at the end of the night, he kept going on about what a great idea it was and how many people he had met throughout the evening. I’ll definitely be back next year with clients again.”
Maura McLaren, executive director and CEO, Real Estate Institute of Canada, also gave the event an enthusiastic thumbs up. “It was well organized.. fun with entertaining games and prizes and all for a great charity. I’ll be sure to attend again next year!”
“Even if the [MEIT] committee didn’t want to organize this event again, I don’t think we can easily walk away from it,” chuckled Sheila Wong, the event’s founder and co-chair. “It’s really caught on and gaining a life of its own. There’s no stopping it so we’ll be back in 2015.”
